Unexpected Color Combo We’re Loving: Pink and Mustard

Hot Damn It’s Friday (HDIF)!  We’re happy to be on the cusp of some free time, and also glad to bring you a color combination that is perhaps on the cusp of good taste: mustard yellow and pink. It’s a combo we find strangely appealing–complementary yet contradictory in a way that’s pleasing all over.  Here are some rooms that use this mix in just the right way:

Are you picking up what we’re putting down?  Or were you mentally captioning each photo with the words “bilious flesh”?  Either way, we’d love to hear!  Have a terrific weekend and make sure to check in on Monday for a new post!

You guys are too young to remember how popular this color combo was in the late 60’s. I had quite a few polyester outfits that you would probably not have chosen to post on your site. But I think the modern pairings are quite nice – in small doses. And, as usual, you’ve chosen just the right samplings to offer us. Thanks!

I am actually surprised by how well this combination of colours worked. It seems to work best when both colours are in the same tonal range or same strength of vibrancy, less so when one is muted and the other more bold.

I totally agree–it seems to work best when they have a similar tonal value. I’ve always loved colors that are beautiful because they’re kind of not, like mustard, chartreuse, and puce. There’s a little bit of rebellion in them, you know? Thank you, I hope you have a great weekend!

I like it—as Carol says, in small doses. I wonder what the wall covering is in the first photo—wallpaper or maybe it’s just the photo filter? It looks like it has a nice texture that I like with the gooey painting and smoother damask sofa. As always, thanks for sharing!

I wish I knew what was on the wall in the first picture–it looks like velvet! I’m with you, a little goes a long way. Thanks Michelle!

Yes! Pink and mustard, especially hot pink and mustard. Immediately took my mind back to your Mother’s Day post showing your mom’s awesomely beautiful weaving with… wait for it……pink and mustard! And needing to find and drool over that wonderful piece of Donna Matthews artwork once more, I happily scrolled backwards through the summer of Red House West. I smiled, I laughed, I remembered. So much fun, SO impressed!! Thank you both, and keep blogging! xoxo

What a sweet comment, thank you! I had forgotten about the pink/mustard wow factor in my mom’s rug–the blog knows me better than I know myself! xo

Can’t believe I really have wifi in a Utah campground! Like the pink and yes, Marlene. I like it hot too, and mustard… But I opted for blue ( I am such a blue girl!) and pumpkin as my favorite!

I do remember seeing those marvelous woven rugs of Donna’s and that wow combination.

Loving red house west while on the road! Maybe I need some hot mustard in our ’93 van?!?!
