We thought we’d ease into this Monday (which is rainy in Eugene and chilly in Anchorage), with some light and lovely lace. Lace can be tricky; use too much or in the wrong way and it can seem fussy, dated, or too shabby chic. But done right it can bring a romantic bohemian sweetness to a room. Let’s take a look at some examples:
This pretty portiere gives this all-white room some much needed texture and interest:
There’s no shortage of lace in this room, but with the more modern and colorful accents and the bare-bulb light fixture, it looks just right:
The lace bedskirt (cleverly fashioned from a tablecloth) is perfectly paired with the raw wood headboard and makes this glamorous bedroom unique:
In this minimalist space, the lace coverlet adds much needed texture and contrast. We love it:
These next two images make a strong argument for lace in the bathroom – using thrifted tablecloths layered over a liner would be an easy way to achieve this look in real life:
Lace makes for such pretty and casual drapes. Open the windows and let the loveliness billow:

We’re in agreement on this one: our favorite room is the second bathroom. How about you?

Rainy, foggy morning here – and though I welcome the rain – I love that billowy lace curtain photo – warm air, sunshine just beyond, guaranteed. Enjoyed seeing all these possibilities for lace – layers and drapings and unusual combinations (with rustic seems enchanting!).

I’m with Katy about that billowy curtain. But I also love the second room with the bare lightbulb. My cousin Margy got the most wonderful lacy curtains at Target to put in the upstairs bedrooms of her Connecticut cottage. They just make the rooms seem so summery and fresh and romantic. And Katie already got my vote! Good luck Katie. You’re always a winner with me.

The lace tablecloth I brought home from Crete, made by a mother and daughter in a tiny village near one of the archaeological “villas” our tour visited, was too small for my dining room table and, in a moment of inspiration, as sun based our home this summer, I pinned it up in one window on an enclosed porch looking out to the river. Its patterns and the fact it’s crocheted with a heavier thread make a contrast and connection to the many foliaged textures outside. I love its “one off” look and the patterns it casts on the carpet.
