DIY Inspiration Vol. 3

Hey everybody, and welcome to DIY Friday volume 3!  One Friday a month we do a roundup of DIY projects from around the web that we’re dying to try.  You can check out previous DIY Friday posts, as well as some of our own DIY ventures, here.  Now for this month’s inspiration!

From Katie:

These yarn banners seem simple to make and are so pretty!  Since painting my dining room dark blue I’ve been thinking of art possibilities in there, and these would be a great way to bring in some color and texture.

I’m completely in love with all things Rifle Paper Co. and also in need of a wall clock, so this DIY from Henry Happened is really speaking my language.  I love that she painted the clock hands bright pink!

From Mera:

I like the idea of dream catchers, but visually they are not usually my favorite things.  This version, with it’s off-center inner circle and tidy embroidery thread dangles is so pretty and delicate, and I’m intrigued (I would probably omit the feathers).

My tassel love is evolving into a love of pom poms.  Plus, I have quite a few friends who are about to have babies, and I have a some baby-friendly pom pom projects floating around in my brain.  This looks like a great tutorial, and I think I’ll give it a go.

Have a great weekend everyone!  Katie will be back on Monday with a confession of sorts, so check back in with us then!

I have to say that I cringed a little bit to see that woman cutting the nice yarn into short pieces. And dream-catchers always seems closer to “dustcatchers” to me. But I did think the clock and the pom-poms very colorful and fun. I enjoy your various Friday offerings. Thanks!

Thank YOU Carol! We like hearing your feedback and certainly know that the things we like won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Maybe those short pieces of yarn could be re-purposed into pom poms???

Katie, dear, I do more than cringe. Carol is my model for temperance. But I must overreach. I have been a thread person for most of the 75 decades of my life, weaving, knitting, crocheting, sewing, embroidery, and manipulating in traditional Alaska Native ways that lead to my helping resurrect the Chilkat Blanket. I urge you to not succumb to the fringe folly that the web is giving you. I went to the web site resource for this DIY and was appalled by the accolades. You can do much better on those beautiful blue walls. Please go beyond this fringe thing and find the worthy choice.

Thanks for weighing in Donna! I don’t have any background in textiles, and I love hearing your thoughts. I’ll definitely take it to heart. xo

Oh, I don’t know, I rather like the fringy banners, although I imagine them in a different color scheme—a range of cool blues with a touch of metallic silver, and I’d steer clear of the acrylic yarn. There is such a wide variety of materials available these days—nubby silks, iridescent ribbon, maybe a few beautiful beads scattered throughout. Personally I think it could be quite beautiful. Thanks for sharing this idea!

I really like your daring and your investigating and your considering – knowing that you will take any ideas (like these fringy banners) and make them your own as you have done so often with ideas on this blog (I sort of imagine you making a take on this with repurposed yarn of some sort.) It’s also just fun to see totally unexpected things (like these fringy banners) and appreciate you gathering these ideas for us in your DIY Fridays. I missed this last week and glad I came back to see! Thanks!
